Friday 26th May

The Cardigan Bay Marine Wildlife Centre is a must-visit in this part of the world. In addition to learning about local marine life, daily guided boat trips set out from the Centre to spot bottlenose dolphins, porpoises, seals and birds that frequent this beautiful part of the Welsh coastline. Boat tours range from pleasant 1.5-hour jaunts to day-long survey trips.
From New Quay, follow the Cardigan Bay coastline north for a little over 20 miles to Aberystwyth and climb aboard the Vale of Rheidol Railway. On Friday 26th May, the heritage steam locomotive departs Aberystwyth and travels through stunning scenery to Devil’s Bridge. Here, you can take the time to explore the spectacular waterfalls and the Rheidol Gorge, before heading back to Aberystwyth.

Saturday 27th May

Head to Elan Valley Visitor Centre bright and early on Saturday morning for a fascinating Dam Patrol excursion. This part of Wales is famous for its dams, and between 9.30am – 1.00pm you’ll have the chance to join Elan Valley’s Dam Inspector for a routine patrol, during which you’ll learn all about the history and monitoring of the region’s reservoirs.

If you love life in the fast lane and enjoy cycling, don’t miss the Downhill Biking race of this year’s AberCycleFest. Taking place in Aberystwyth from 1.00pm on Saturday, expect mud, thrills and spills during this adrenalin-fueled 9-day cycling festival. Competitors face a wild ride down via twisty tracks and wooden bridges, which makes for a thrilling spectacle.

Sunday 28th May

On Sunday, take a leisurely stroll around Blaenfforest as part of NGS Open Gardens. Blaenfforest is set within picture-postcard scenery and is a real treat for the senses. Discover its wildlife ponds and bridges, lush borders and hidden corners, woodland walk and orchard beehives. Oh, and watch out for free roaming peacocks.

If you stay at the Rhandirmwyn campsite then be sure to check out the Caer Beris Manor Hotel. It’s taking part in NGS Open Gardens on Sunday. It’s around a 45-minute drive from Rhandirmwyn and for those who love sprawling parklands and winding wooded trails, it’s well worth the trek. Wander freely amongst 27 acres of mature parklands and arboretum, graced with large displays of rhododendrons and beautiful features including an Edwardian Rose archway.

On Monday, make a beeline for Cae Hir Gardens in Lampeter for its cheerful Garden & Craft Festival. The town’s Aberaeron Square Field sets the scene for this popular annual free event, organised by the Ceredigion and District Growers Association.
